Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Headlines Melvin L. Joseph Memorial at Georgetown Speedway

Georgetown, DE — The national spotlight turns to Georgetown Speedway this Friday, April 24, as the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series invade the historic half-mile for the prestigious Melvin L. Joseph Memorial.

One of the most anticipated events of the season, the 49-lap main event will pay $21,049 to win, honoring longtime Speedway supporter Melvin L. Joseph while bringing the sport’s top drivers to Sussex County for a marquee night of competition.

Friday’s event also serves as the opening round of a demanding three-race Mid-Atlantic swing for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, with teams set to compete on three consecutive nights at Georgetown Speedway (DE), BAPS Motor Speedway (PA), and Hagerstown Speedway (MD). The tripleheader will test drivers and teams on adaptability, endurance, and speed across three uniquely different racing surfaces.

In addition to the on-track action, Friday night will serve as the national unveiling of a wide range of offseason upgrades to Georgetown Speedway, made possible through the Delaware Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund. Fans and competitors alike will experience a dramatically enhanced facility, highlighted by:

  • All-new LED lighting system, including new light poles and infield wiring
  • Three new luxury suites
  • Certified scales on pit road
  • Newly paved pit road
  • Upgraded lighting throughout the pit area
  • A brand-new pit concession stand
  • Additional jersey barriers installed for improved on-track safety
  • A full track reconfiguration, shortening the track’s diameter to tighten racing and increase side-by-side action

These improvements mark a significant investment in the future of Georgetown Speedway and elevate the overall experience for fans, teams, and touring series alike.

Known for producing high-speed, edge-of-your-seat racing, the newly configured Georgetown Speedway will provide an even more competitive stage for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series’ elite talent. Fans can expect a full program featuring Dirt Draft Hot Laps, Allstar Performance Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and the 49-lap A-Main finale.

Supporting the headline event will be the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Dirt Late Model Flynn’s Tire/Gunter’s Honey Touring Series, which returns to Georgetown for the first time since 2023 as part of its 2026 season-opening doubleheader weekend. The series will compete for a $5,000 winner’s share, bringing a strong regional field to complement the national stars of the Lucas Oil tour. Past Georgetown winners include Max Blair, Ross Robinson, and Kyle Hardy, while current local standout Nick Davis has already visited victory lane this season.

Fan-favorite divisions the Little Lincolns and Delmarva Chargers will also be part of the program, ensuring a full night of racing action.

Beyond the racing, events of this caliber deliver a meaningful economic boost to Sussex County and the surrounding region. With teams, crews, and fans traveling in from across multiple states, local hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, and small businesses all benefit from the increased traffic surrounding race weekend, reinforcing Georgetown Speedway’s role as a key driver of regional tourism and economic activity.

For the first time ever, Georgetown Speedway is introducing an “Every Ticket is a Pit Ticket” experience, giving fans full access to the pit area for an up-close look at the cars, crews, and drivers—bringing them closer to the action than ever before.
