Georgetown, DE - Billy Pauch Jr. and Danny Bouc claimed $2,000 victories in each of the Deron Rust Memorial Twin-20 main events for the Modifieds at Georgetown Speedway on Friday night.
The race was held in memory of the former competitor and promoter of the Delaware ½-mile racing facility.
The first 20 lap feature event saw Carson Wright and Billy Pauch Jr. bring the field to green with Pauch Jr leading lap number one. Wright and Ryan Krachun settled into second and third.
Pauch Jr. went to work right away building a lead over Wright which stood at a half straightaway just a few laps in while Danny Bouc and Paul Mancini filled out the top five.
Reaching the back of the field on lap eight, Pauch Jr. looked to begin putting cars a lap down while Wright was doing all that he could to keep Krachun at bay. A lap later Krachun’s No. 51 would go up in smoke and come to a stop in turns one and two bringing out the caution.
Bouc, who started sixth, would take over second from Wright on the restart as his No. 91 would get out of the groove coming off of turn two causing him to surrender third to Jordan Watson.
Pauch Jr.'s advantage over Bouc would remain about the same over the next few laps before Bouc would suffer a problem of his own.
While trying to reel in Pauch Jr, Bouc would get above the cushion in turns three and four resulting in mud getting inside the wheel and slicing the valve stem off his right rear tire causing him to draw the caution on lap 12 moving Jordan Watson into the runner-up position.
When green replaced yellow Pauch Jr. again took off with the lead as third through fifth bunched up off of turn two resulting in HJ Bunting taking over the third spot and Joseph Watson now fourth.
Over the next six laps, Pauch Jr. would amass a half straightaway lead over Jordan Watson and looked to have the win easily in hand when Paul Mancini slowed at the end of the backstretch bringing out the caution setting up a green-white-checkered finish.
Watson would throw everything he could at Pauch Jr. over the final two laps, getting alongside Pauch Jr., but not able to make a pass.
Pauch Jr. would take the win over Jordan Watson, HJ Bunting, Joseph Watson and Ryan Riddle.
“It was an awesome night,” proclaimed Pauch Jr. “Things just have to go your way, you have to draw good. Drawing the outside pole helped, once I got by Wright on the start, I settled into a rhythm there and the car was really good. I started to get checked up a little there in traffic but the car was so good it really didn’t matter. We’re on a pretty good roll here,” said Pauch Jr.
The invert for the second 20 lap feature event was drawn on the frontstretch by the last car on the lead lap in the first event. Jay Wimbrow III pulled the eight putting a pair of Brandon’s in Brandon Watkins and Brandon Grosso on the front row.
Grosso would get out to the early lead while Bouc and Watkins dueled for second. The yellow would fly on lap two when Austin Dean’s No. 1 started smoking down the frontstretch then slowed in turn one.
Bouc would take over second from Watkins on the restart and immediately go to work on trying to pass Grosso while Ryan Riddle, Billy Pauch Jr. and Watkins filled out the top five.
Pauch Jr. would take over third a lap later while the battle at the front of the field began to heat up even more.
At the halfway signal, Grosso led slightly over Bouc with Pauch Jr. on his horse trying to catch the lead pair.
Grosso would run the top of the race track to perfection lap after lap, which allowed Bouc to get alongside using the bottom groove but never have enough momentum to clear the pass. Grosso’s momentum would allow him to pull away by a car length on the straightaway and Bouc would again pull even in the corners while the laps clicked off.
Finally, on lap 14, Bouc would dive to the bottom in turns one and two and slide up in front of Grosso taking command.
While this was going on, Jordan Watson would make his way by Riddle for fourth but the real man on the move was Joseph Watson.
Joseph, who after finishing fourth in the first race decided to head pit side during the five minute break to put a tire on his No. 21 and give up his starting spot forcing him to start at the tail of the field had made his way to sixth.
Meanwhile, up front at the two-to-go signal, Bouc had built up a half straightaway lead over Grosso.
Going untouched over the final laps, Bouc raced to the win over Grosso, Pauch Jr., Jordan Watson and Joseph Watson.
“The top was definitely where you needed to be. I was getting better on the bottom there. That's why once I got the lead I stayed there. I knew I was going to have to do something different than him (Grosso) and he was starting to fade a little bit, but he was able to carry so much speed up there, luckily I was able to make it work. I had to hit about perfectly in one and two and it worked out well.”
After a rough start, which included an opening lap incident that involved nine cars, the Crate 602 Sportsman feature got going with Bryce Bashore leading the way.
While Bashore pulled away at the front of the field, Tom Sherby and James Hill battled it out for second.
With the field settling down after the rough early going laps three through 19 were run off nonstop as the red flag flew for a flipping Jacob King in turns one and two as Bashore took the checkered flag.
WIth only Bashore taking the checkered flag, the race would end in a one lap shootout. Sherby would try on the final circuit but Bashore would take the checkered flag. Hill, Luke Bunting and Adam White would round out the top five.
Following the event, the engine in Bashore’s No. 5 was impounded and taken to one of the garages on the Melvin Joseph Construction property where it is locked under the watch of an alarm and security camera with an inspection occurring on Monday deeming the race results unofficial.
Josh Franz would capture the $2,500 first prize in the Sport Compact Dirt Racing Association feature event and Eric Reed was the Little Lincoln victor.
