Weekend Wash: Camp Barnes Benefit Race Postponed to Oct. 27, Friday Night Rained Out

GEORGETOWN, DE – Remnants of Hurricane Ian will put the 50th Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race on hold.

The golden anniversary edition of the event – scheduled for Georgetown Speedway this Saturday (Oct. 1) – has been postponed by heavy rainfall and winds predicted for the weekend as Ian tracks northward.

The Delaware State Police and Georgetown Speedway management announced the postponement on Thursday to allow fans, competitors, staff, and sponsors the opportunity to alter plans.

With precipitation moving into Delmarva on Friday afternoon, Georgetown Speedway, after discussion with the USAC East Coast Sprint Car group, has opted to cancel the Friday night (Sept. 30) program as well. A potential make-up date will be sought for this event.

The Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race will now take place on Thursday, Oct. 27 as a kick-off to the most lucrative weekend in Delaware dirt-track racing history.

The entire Camp Barnes program – headlined by $5,500-to-win events for the J.W. Brown Logging Modifieds (30 laps) and Super Late Models (25 laps) – will be contested on Oct. 27.

The Oct. 27 rescheduled date leads into a massive Melvin L. Joseph Memorial Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend at the Sussex County half-mile oval.

Friday night (Oct. 28) will feature a PA/NJ Spec Small-Block 30-lap event ($3,000 to win, up to $5,000 to win with “Gamblers Feeâ posted), RUSH Late Models (20 laps, $1,000 to win), Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Modified 15-lap Qualifiers for Saturdays Halmar ‘Elite Series and Hurlock Auto & Speed Supply South Region championship, Super Late Model group time trials and heat races, Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars, Delaware Super Trucks and Delmarva Chargers.
